Coping with Change

Change is one of the only definite things in life. We change, we grow, we age, we move. The word for the feelings we have about change is 'transition'. We do this when we are preparing to change. A change or shift from one thing to another.

Things like:

Starting a new school, college or university, starting an apprenticeship, job or an evening course, moving house or getting a new foster placement, parents or caregivers separating or getting divorced, getting ready to out yourself as ‘L/G/B/T/Q/I/+',’ welcoming a new baby into the family, when a family member, friend, or beloved pet dies.

But there are lots of other times of transition during our lives. It’s totally normal. It’s the preparation, thoughts and feelings that happen before, during and after a life change.

And even though it happens all the time, people find change hard! It can be exciting and fun, but can also make us unsettled, angry, sad, stressed, confused, and out of routine.

Top tips for managing transition and change.

1.     Keep as much routine as you can – sleep, exercise and eat regularly. Staying active is good for your body and mind. Try and continue to do the things you enjoy (hobbies, sports etc)

2.    Talk to people - find people you trust and talk about your feelings. Your peers, friends or family members might have similar feeling to you. Don’t keep your worries in, share them out and they will be less powerful. Sharing your feelings is important for managing your transition.

3.    Trust and believe in yourself – you can do it! Change is challenging but can help you grow and learn

4.    Be prepared; find out as much as you can before the change happens. Remember you are not alone, other people have had similar experiences and can offer information or advice

5.    Try not to panic, your feelings will go up and down, but you will be okay
