The Pokémon World Championships are on now in Japan
Today is day 2 of the Pokémon World Championships in Yokohama Japan 11-13 August.
It is an extra special one because for the first time since it began in 2004 it is being held in Japan, the birthplace of Pokémon. So, this weekend some of the greatest Pokémon players from across the globe will be playing at the Pacifico Yokohama convention centre. The champions of each of the three divisions (which are based on players ages) will be crowned World Champions.
The age categories are Juniors (aged 12 and under), Seniors (aged 12-16) and Masters (anyone aged over 16).
The World Championships is the only event in the ‘Championship Series’ that requires an invitation. Only the best players who have picked up top points in championships throughout the year are invited to take part for a chance to win thousands of pounds in prizes.
But don’t panic because it’s not just specially invited guests who get to have all the fun! At the convention centre there is a public viewing area for fans to watch the competitions. There will also be side tournaments, special events and Pokémon themed festivals and parades happening all around Yokohama. And even less reason to panic if Wirral rather than Yokohama, because it’s all available online - last year when it was hosted in London, it was watched by over 8 million people online. Find out more on the official website.
If you live in Wirral and love all things Pokémon you should check out the Geek Retreat in Hoylake. Mike and his team would love you to call in, play games, crochet (if you are into that kind of thing!), buy Pokémon related stuff, drink milkshakes and eat hotdogs, but most of all just chill and be yourself in their super friendly, super safe cafe style gaming shop. Where better to Geek Out than at the Geek Retreat in Hoylake. Mike very kindly donated prizes to our young people’s Zillo Awards so go and say hi so he knows it was worth it!
Based right on the high street, 2 Market Street, CH47 2AE - just near Hoylake’s roundabout. They have loads of geeky activities and games to play so get yourself down there and talk Pokémon all weekend! They are also on Facebook as Geek Retreat Wirral with all updates and opening times.
