The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) is similar to the adult UK parliament, but it is ran by young people for young people and enables 11-18-year olds to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better and bring around social change.

What does it mean to be a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP)

Being an MYP is a very exciting opportunity. You will collect and represent the views of other young people in WIRRAL on issues that matter to them and present them on a local, regional and national level.

Youth MYPs are not based on a political party but stand only for youth. They are in placement for a 2-year term.

What’s it all about and how does it work?

It’s about your passion to support and bring positive changes for young people in Wirral. Based on the needs of Wirral young people and your drive to make things happen.

Being able to represent Wirral young people to the best of your ability, through training, meetings, presentations, campaigns, discussion, and debates.

Last year we sat down to chat to Olivia and Leo our current MYP to talk about how they got involved.

How did you get involved in local Youth Parliament?

Olivia Wirral MYP

I was part of Wirral Youth Voice group and as I was growing in confidence and taking a more active role in the group it was suggested I run as a candidate for Youth Parliament. I was really nervous at first having to write a manifesto but I gained so much from the experience and it has given me the opportunity to explore and bring awareness to some really important issues.

I came to Youth Parliament through a totally different way! I was reading local news paper and saw an advertisement looking for young people to run as candidates for youth parliament. I guess I saw the advertisement at the perfect time as I had been thinking seriously about politics recently in particular around the environment and the effects of climate change. I thought it would be an opportunity I couldn’t miss and decided to give it a shot.
