She’s A Barbie Girl… In A Billion Dollar Hit Film!
Just three weeks at the cinema and the estimated tickets sales globally have reached an astounding $1.03 billion. This makes Greta Gerwig the first solo female director with a billion-dollar movie. GO GRETA!
Have you seen it? Did you wear pink? Do you think its all hype? Did you like it? Did you learn anything about Life/Barbie/Ken/Shoes? So many questions to ask you when we think about the summer box office film hit ‘Barbie’!
Ticket sales mean that Greta Gerwig becomes only the third female director to make a $1 billion dollar film, (all three of which have taken place in the last 10 years). Jennifer Lee was the first, when she co-directed Frozen in 2013 with Chris Buck, and Anne Boden was the second, directing Captain Marvel (2019) with Ryan Fleck. Greta Gerwig is the first solo female director to make the list.
“I wanted to make something anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic,” said Gerwig to The New York Times a couple of days after Barbie opened in cinemas around the world. Musing over the thought that she added- “the idea that it’s actually being received that way, it’s sort of extraordinary.”
