Staying Safe on Halloween: A Guide for Teens
ZILLO Young Reporter gives us his top tips to make this years Halloween fun and safe.
Halloween is one of the most thrilling times of the year for teens. The opportunity to dress up, have fun with friends, and maybe even pull off a few pranks can be a blast. However, having a good time doesn't mean you should disregard safety. In this article, we'll provide you with some tips and advice on how to enjoy Halloween while staying safe.
Costume Safety
Choosing your costume is a big deal, but don't forget about safety:
Make sure your costume fits well, doesn't drag on the ground, and allows for good visibility. You don't want to trip or not see where you're going.
If you're into DIY costumes, use flame-resistant materials to stay safe around candles and decorations.
Opt for face paint or makeup instead of masks that can limit your vision.
Stick some reflective tape or stickers on your costume for better visibility when it's dark.
Supervision and Groups
While you're not little children anymore, it's still smart to stick together:
Always go out with a group of friends or at least one responsible adult, even if you feel you're old enough to go on your own.
Keep in touch with your group via smartphones or channel your inner stranger things with walkie-talkies so you can find each other if you get separated.
Trick-or-Treating Safety
You're never too old to enjoy some trick-or-treating. Just make sure to be smart about it:
Choose well-lit streets and neighbourhoods you're familiar with.
Respect "no entry" signs on some houses and never enter a stranger's home.
Don't start eating sweets until you're back home, and your parents/ carers have had a chance to check it over.
Bring a torch – it's both cool and practical.
Sweets Inspection
Your sweets haul is like a treasure chest, but you should be a savvy pirate:
Before indulging, inspect your loot. If something looks weird or the packaging is damaged, play it safe and toss it in the bin.
When it comes to homemade treats, be cautious, and only accept them from people you know well.
Home Safety
If you're staying at home to hand out sweets or hosting a party, here's how to ensure everyone stays safe:
Keep pathways to your house well-lit and clear of any trip hazards.
Swap out real candles in pumpkins for battery-operated ones to avoid fire risks.
Secure your pets – Halloween can be overwhelming for them, and you don't want any escapes.
Road Safety
Be smart around the streets:
If you're driving, take it slow through residential areas, especially on Halloween night.
Watch out for kids who might dart out from between parked cars.
Always be cautious and give way to pedestrians. Use your indicators when turning.
If your on bikes make sure you have lights, a helmet and something reflective or bright on to make sure cars can see you.
Halloween is a great time for teens to have a blast. By staying safe and following these tips, you can make sure the fun doesn't turn into fright. Have a spooktacular and safe celebration, and create awesome memories with your friends!
