Cerberus Continues To Affect Europe

It might be raining here but its very hot in Southern Europe

Who is Cerberus and why is it in Southern Europe?

The Italian Meteorological Society has named the current European heatwave ‘Cerberus’ (after the mythical 3 headed monster who was said to guard the gates of hell!) According the the CBBC Newsround website the severe heatwave has contributed to wildfires on the Spanish island of La Palma, power cuts in mainland Greece due to so many people using air-con to cool down.

It also explains that climate change is making everywhere warmer. Children at a summer camp near Athens in Greece had to be relocated due to forest fires and in other parts of the world even Disneyland in Tokyo had to delay outdoor shows due to the heat!

Astonishingly in the city of Phoenix, Arizona (USA) the temperature has stayed above 43c for 17 days straight! At one of the hottest places on the planet, California Death Valley (USA) the temperature is recorded to have reached 52c in recent days!

So next time you are thinking about having a moan about the rain…… don’t forget there are places in Europe on fire due to the heat.

If you are lucky enough to be going abroad this summer make sure you know your sun safety rules, SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK, SLIDE (cover up, use suncream, wear a hat, seek shade and use sunglasses)
