Golf Mania Hits Hoylake!

The 151st Open Championship at The Royal Liverpool Golf Course

If you go to a secondary school in West Wirral you are probably enjoying a couple of extra days summer holidays this year! This is because Hoylake and West Kirby have gone golf mad for the 151st ‘Open Championship’.

There is definitely a buzz in the air, lots of extra buses and loads of people walking round carrying massive umbrella’s! There are also numerous golfing ‘scarecrow’ types popping up in and around Hoylake and Moreton - see how many you can spot.

Here at Zillo we feel very lucky and proud to live on Wirral. The eyes of the golfing world are all on Hoylake, (in Wirral, in Merseyside, in the mighty Northwest of England) this week. It’s in all the sporting news and it feels like people are talking about it all over the place. “We likely will see rain, sun, wind, and whatever else the sea blows into Royal Liverpool, so we’re looking for players who can handle the conditions, the course, and the pressure. Drumroll please …” (canoe.com 19/07/23).

Some of you may have tickets, or know family members who are going. Some of you may not care about golf at all. But the good news is that the thousands of visitors will bring loads of money into our local economy by staying in hotels, using public transport and buying food and refreshments.

Talking of public transport be aware that there are parking restrictions and changes to the West Kirby trainline (which terminates at Hoylake while the golf is on).

The 2023 golf tournament starts officially tomorrow on 20th July and ends on the 23rd. This will be the 13th time that The Open will be played at Royal Liverpool.
